Be careful with part-worn tyres
Part-worn tyres look like an easy saving and are often a false one. They are legal to sell, but only under strict rules: they must be permanently marked "PART WORN" in letters at least 4mm high, must have at least 2mm of tread, and must have no unrepaired damage to the structure. Trading standards work has repeatedly found stock on sale failing those rules. Worse, a part-worn tyre with 3mm left gives you a fraction of the life of a new one, so the cost per mile is usually higher than buying new. On a first car the stakes are higher again: defective tyres carry three penalty points each, and six points inside two years of passing your test revokes your licence.

- Either works. The size is moulded into the sidewall, like 205/55 R16 91V. If the car has had different wheels fitted at some point, the sidewall is the more reliable of the two.
