Fireworks Night falls on Thursday 5 November this year, and displays around Bracknell, Ascot and the surrounding villages run across the whole week. With the clocks gone back it's dark by 5pm, so the roads around displays get busy, smoky and unpredictable.
1. Slow down near displays and estates
Crowds spill into the road before and after displays, and children are excited and easily distracted. Drop your speed well below the limit on residential streets and near parks.
2. Watch for smoke and drifting fog
Bonfire smoke can hang low over roads, especially on still, damp evenings. Treat it like fog: slow down, leave a bigger gap and use dipped headlights.
3. Use fog lights properly
The Highway Code says you should only use fog lights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally to less than 100 metres, and you must switch them off once it improves so you don't dazzle other drivers.
4. Park away from the action
If you're going to a display, don't park close to the bonfire or the launch area. Stray sparks and ash can damage paintwork, and you'll get away faster afterwards.
5. Expect sudden bangs
Loud fireworks can startle drivers, cyclists and animals, including horses on country lanes. Keep both hands on the wheel and give riders plenty of room.
6. Check your lights before you go
It's dark, smoky and busy, so make sure every bulb works and your windscreen is clean inside and out.
