- Drivetrain
- Rear-wheel drive, ZF 8-speed auto or 6-speed manual
The M140i is the rare modern hot hatch with a big turbocharged six driving the rear wheels, and the B58 is strong enough that the engine is rarely the thing holding you back. On the road it already feels quick. What separates a fast M140i from a frustrating one is heat management, grip and a differential that actually puts the power down.
What holds a M140i back
Heat soak is the real limit
The B58 makes strong power until the intake and charge air get hot, then the car quietly pulls timing and slows down. On a warm track day you feel it after two or three laps. Cooling work matters more on this car than another few horsepower.
No mechanical limited-slip differential
The M140i relies on brake-based electronic control rather than a proper mechanical LSD. Out of slower corners the inside wheel gives up and the traction control steps in. Fitting a mechanical LSD transforms how the car drives out of a corner.
Brakes are sized for the road
The standard setup stops a road car well and fades on a circuit. Pads and fluid are the first fix, and they are cheap next to a caliper upgrade that most owners do not need.
Soft standard damping
Body control runs out before the tyres do. The car rolls onto its outside shoulder and understeers on entry, which flatters the chassis less than it deserves.
The order we'd do it in
Sequence matters more than spend. This is a genuine running order, so it is numbered.
- 1Brake fluid and a track-capable pad compound
- 2Tyres suited to how you actually use the car
- 3Cooling: charge cooling and intake temperature control
- 4Damping and geometry, then corner weighting
- 5Mechanical limited-slip differential
- 6Software and induction once the car can use the power
What we can do on your M140i
We fit and set up parts rather than hold them on a shelf. Parts are sourced per build and quoted before anything is ordered.
Brakes & suspension
- High-temperature fluid and pad compounds matched to road, track or mixed use
- Braided lines for a firmer pedal under sustained heat
- Coilovers or matched spring and damper packages
- Camber plates, adjustable arms and full geometry setup
- Corner weighting on our own setup equipment
- Mechanical limited-slip differential supply and fitting
Engine & induction
- Uprated charge cooling to hold power over a full session
- Intake and filtration work aimed at intake temperature, not noise
- Exhaust work from cat-back through to downpipe
- Remapping through a trusted tuner once cooling and grip are sorted
- Oil cooling and fluid specification for track use
Safety & interior
- Fixed-back or bucket seats with compliant mounting
- Harnesses and, where required, a bolt-in or weld-in cage
- Fire extinguisher mounting and battery isolation for competition use
We will not promise you a power figure over the phone. The B58 responds well to software, but on an M140i the cooling, differential and brakes decide whether that power is usable. We would rather sort those first and quote the engine work after we have seen the car.
Performance Upgrades
Parts Fitted Properly
We supply and fit performance parts as part of a build rather than selling them off the shelf. Tell us the car or bike and what you're chasing, and we'll source the right kit and quote you before anything is ordered.
