The Fiesta ST is the cheapest genuinely brilliant chassis on sale in the last decade, which is why so many end up on track. It is also the car where cheap modifications go wrong most often. Done in the right order it becomes seriously quick on a circuit. Done backwards you get a loud, hot car that runs out of brakes on lap three.
What holds a Fiesta ST back
No limited-slip differential as standard
Most Fiesta STs left the factory without a mechanical LSD, relying on brake-based torque vectoring instead. Add power and the inside front wheel simply spins. A Quaife or similar plate differential is the upgrade owners consistently rate highest.
Top-mounted intercooler heat soak
The intercooler sits on top of the engine in warm air, so it heats up quickly and stays hot. On a track day the car feels strong for a lap and then noticeably flat. This is the classic Fiesta ST complaint and it is a cooling problem, not a power problem.
Brake fade comes early
The standard brakes are fine for the road and overwhelmed on a circuit. Fluid and pads make a bigger difference here than on almost any other car we see.
Soft rear end and standard mounts
The Mk7 uses a torsion beam rear that responds very well to an uprated anti-roll bar. Standard engine mounts also allow a lot of movement, which blurs the gearchange and shifts weight under load.
The order we'd do it in
Sequence matters more than spend. This is a genuine running order, so it is numbered.

- 3Uprated rear anti-roll bar and motorsport-style engine mount
- 4Intercooler to deal with heat soak
- 5Limited-slip differential
- 6Software and exhaust last, once the car can use it
